With the release of CPD’s asylum seeker report,  A New Approach: Breaking the Stalemate of Refugee & Asylum Seekers here, Madeleine Coorey writes about 34 prominent business and union leaders supporting a new direction in asylum seeker policy.

For Thomas Keneally, “Australia’s asylum and refugee policy is still sadly characterised by human tragedy, political opportunism, policy failure and great cost”.

While Australia has a long-running mandatory detention policy for asylum seekers, this constitutes a “disproportionate reaction” to a relatively minor policy issue, the report said.
