Mark Bahnisch discusses the rise of the Contracting State, the role of public servants within society, and the necessity of Whitlam and Hawke’s attempt to enshrine the public sector as a ‘model employer’.

With strong links between attachment to the labour market promoting individual aims, Mark calls for “more about how stable and strong ties, mediated through work with a social purpose, promote societal cohesion and resilience”.
