Verona Burgess | Attack on Job Cut Plan

Verona Burgess, in today’s Australian Financial Review reports on CPD’s recent research from our Public Service program that:

“…the Coalition’s planned cut of 12,000 jobs in its first year in office is based on a belief in smaller government and the capacity of private and communtiy bodies to deliver services that have traditionally been the responsibility of public service agencies”

Our recent paper, The State of the Public Service: An Alternative Report, finds that these cuts are unnecessary and will also likely endanger the quality of service delivery to the Australian public. The APS employs about the same amount of people now as in 1990, despite 16 per cent population growth. Can we afford to cut levels further?
