IPCC report ‘most scrutinised document in the history of science’

The latest climate change report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has resulted in climate experts being more certain than ever before that humans are responsible for global warming. Temperatures are increasing and short periods of slower warming do not reflect any long-term trends. Despite this Australia appears to have elected a “climate denial government” that has begun an assault on climate change infrastructure.

As observed in this article by senior columnist for The Age Kenneth Davidson, CPD’s new book Pushing our luck contains a chapter ‘Climate change: reconnecting politics with reality’ by John Wiseman of University of Melbourne. John discusses how Australia could be leading the way in reducing carbon emissions rather than lagging behind other nations.

“The Centre for Policy Development notes there is bipartisan agreement between Britain’s Conservative-led coalition government and the Labour opposition that global warming is both a serious challenge (Britain is committed to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, from 1990 levels, of 34 per cent by 2020 and 80 per cent by 2050) and a major economic opportunity. (Prime Minister David Cameron said this year that: ”It is the countries that prioritise green energy that will secure the biggest share of the jobs and growth in a low carbon sector set to be worth $4 trillion by 2015.”)”
