Andrew is an urban and political geographer who has specialised in undocumented migration, and the effects of border securitisation and immigration detention, as well as asylum and refugee reception. He has a PhD from the University of Southern California, where he focused on humanitarian aid practices in the Mexico-U.S. borderlands. From 2013-2016, Andrew was based at the University of Exeter, where he was Lead Researcher on an ESRC-funded project that investigated how asylum seeker appeal outcomes in the UK vary across different tribunal locations. This project received strong media coverage and was a finalist in the ESRC 'Celebrating Impact' prize for outstanding impact on public policy. Between 2010 and 2013, Andrew was a member of the International Boundaries Research Unit, a consultancy that works to minimise conflict associated with international boundaries on land and at sea, based at Durham University in the UK. Andrew also received a BA(Hons) in Urban Planning and Development from the University of Melbourne, Australia (2003). He is co-editor of the collection Beyond Walls and Cages: Prisons, Borders and Global Crisis (UGA Press, 2012).
Having lived in the U.S. and UK since 2003, including several summers spent in a tent on the Mexico-U.S. border, Andrew has recently returned to Australia. He is happiest when on a bicycle, up a mountain, or in the surf.
